Making Money Online. My Experience
As one of my first posts, I'd like to talk about my experiences making money online. The first thing about making money online is that it's not as easy as posting content and watching the cash roll in. It takes hard work and dedication to build your online empire.
I do make a bit of money online doing the following things:
Selling Crochet Patterns
I have an online store selling patterns, which does get me a few dollars here and there. It's on Ravelry. Ravelry lists my patterns for free, then when I make a sale, they take a small fee. I did try Etsy, but I was pretty much a needle in a haystack there, I got zero sales and racked up quite a listing fee. So I prefer Ravelry to sell patterns. It's less risky for me because there are no listing fees.
Transcribing
I currently work as a transcriber for Gotranscript. I get up to $5 for each transcript, and I actually enjoy working for them. I type fast enough to get my work done within the timeframe they give you (usually 4 hours to get a job done but I get it done in less time depending on the quality of the audio) and my ratings have been good. It's also very interesting to hear all the different conversations and info being transcribed. All kinds of people and companies get their audios transcribed, it's quite interesting hearing people holding discussions, interviews, and debates about different things. Feels a little like I'm a fly on the wall, and some people spill all the tea about their personal experiences and opinions.
In order to transcribe successfully, you must have an excellent command of the English language, as well as be able to follow their guidelines about how they want spelling and grammar to be done. You will have an extra advantage if you can understand different sorts of accents like Australian or British. There are files in other languages to be transcribed too. Transcribing takes a lot of patience, you must listen to every single word and transcribe it accurately, also if you work on full verbatim files you even have to spell out every um, ah or stutter.
Sometimes the audio is terrible, there is lots of cross-talking or background noise and you cannot hear anything, but the good news is you can cancel a job within the first few minutes of taking it if you change your mind about your ability to transcribe it. I also tried working for Transcribeme, but be warned the editors are real grammar Nazis and are relentless about correct English grammar. English is my first language, but my progress with them has been so far at the speed of a turtle.
So now I'm launching a blog to see if I can share some patterns for free, which I love to do and maybe earn a little daily bread from it. Even if I don't get much for this blog, it's okay because I really really enjoy talking about all things crochet! So now I'm going to work on publishing my first free pattern, the beaded money bag. Stay tuned for a lovely green beaded money bag, a quick project and easy to make.
